Arise, And Go!

castle

And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.”  Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying,  “Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. “And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” So he went and did according to the word of the LORD, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan.  The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.  And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.  Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.” 1 Kings 17:1-9

The bible tells us that there lived a widow in Zarephath, a town in Sidon. And when God’s provision for Elijah had ceased, and there was severe drought over the Land,  the Lord sent Elijah to Zarepath where He commanded that a widow would provide for him.  So when Prophet Elijah entered the gate of the city where he met the widow. She was gathering sticks to make fire. Elijah called her and asked her for water and food. She told him that she had only a handful of flour and little oil in the jar and was gathering sticks to make something to eat for her son and for herself and that she may die after eating it. Elijah encouraged the widow not to worry and asked her to make first a cake and bring it to him and then they can have for themselves. He told her that the Lord has promised her that the flour in the bin will never get used up and oil in the jar will never run dry. So she did according to what Elijah told her and was greatly blessed.  But if Elijah had a better idea, and didn’t trust the LORD and do exactly what He was told to do, would he had been blessed by God? No! God’s word is unchanging:

Then Samuel said: “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD?  Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,  And to heed than the fat of rams.

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.

Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king.” 1 Samuel 15:22-23

Those who reject the word of the LORD for their lives will find themselves rejected just like Saul was rejected from being king. Saul for the love of prominence, riches and fame rejected the word of the Lord and was rejected by the Lord from being king. His end was worse than His beginning as the Lord turned His face from Saul. God replaced him with a better man with a man after His own heart who would listen to His voice and obey His commands.

But being in God’s will doesn’t mean that we will not be without problems and challenges from the enemy! The bible tells us that this widow who owned the house her only son became sick and died. She came and poured out her problems to Elijah. The bible records:

So she said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son?” And he said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him out of her arms and carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.  Then he cried out to the LORD and said, “O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow with whom I lodge, by killing her son?”  And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the LORD and said, “O LORD my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him.”  Then the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived.  And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son lives!”  Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is the truth.” 1 Kings 17:18-24

Problems come not to destroy us but prove who we are and the power that we have. Elijah proved that he was a true man of God by taking the son to his upper room, laying him on the bed, and crying out to the LORD to resurrect this boy. And Then the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived.  And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son lives!”

Elisha, who received a double portion of the anointing that was on Elijah, also raised a woman, who also owned a home, her son from the dead. The bible records:

Then Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored to life, saying, “Arise and go, you and your household, and stay wherever you can; for the LORD has called for a famine, and furthermore, it will come upon the land for seven years.” So the woman arose and did according to the saying of the man of God, and she went with her household and dwelt in the land of the Philistines seven years. It came to pass, at the end of seven years, that the woman returned from the land of the Philistines; and she went to make an appeal to the king for her house and for her land. Then the king talked with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, “Tell me, please, all the great things Elisha has done.” Now it happened, as he was telling the king how he had restored the dead to life, that there was the woman whose son he had restored to life, appealing to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, “My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed a certain officer for her, saying, “Restore all that was hers, and all the proceeds of the field from the day that she left the land until now.” 2 Kings 8:1-6

In obedience to the word of the LORD spoken by Elisha, the woman arose and went to the land of the Philistines along with her household for the LORD had called for a famine to come upon the land for seven years. As a result she lost her house and her land and she went to make an appeal to the king for her house and for her land. And as God would have it, the king was talking  with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, about  all the great things Elisha has done.” And it happened, as he was telling the king how Elisha had restored the dead to life, that the woman whose son he had restored to life, appeared. And Gehazi said, “My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.”  So the king appointed a certain officer for her, saying, “Restore all that was hers, and all the proceeds of the field from the day that she left the land until now.” In other words those who obey the word of the Lord, will find that God will take care of them no matter how negative the situation might be.

Storms don’t mean that we are not in the will of God as the disciples of Jesus proved to be true! Jesus told His disciples “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” So He got into a boat with His disciples. And He said to them, and they launched out.  But as they sailed He fell asleep. And a suddenly a  windstorm came down on the lake, and the boat was  filling with water, and the disciples were afraid. The bible records:

And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm.  But He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, “Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!” Luke 8:24-25

Yes, in times when a great tempest comes against God’s trusting ones, it’s wonderful to know that a vessel with Jesus in it cannot sink for even the winds and the sea obey Him as well as everything else, including demons.  Jesus will bring them safely to the other side of plenty and prosperity and victory.  But this is something that God’s people do not seem to understand that no matter what is going on the miracle working God of all power and unlimited riches and resources is on their side. He is for them and with them and not against them and wants to see them get safely through to the other side.  His trusting ones must not be fearful but are to faithful to stand against all the wiles of the enemy who seeks to destroy them by any means.  For the enemy walks about like a roaring lions seeking whom he may devour by any means. God’s word is unchanging:

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 5:8-11

The Word and the Spirit
“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:12)

How is it that some people can read a biblical passage and find it either tedious, confusing, or even foolish, whereas others will receive great understanding and blessing from the very same passage? The answer is that the first group are animated only by the spirit of the world, “the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2), whereas the others are indwelled by the Spirit of God, having received the Holy Spirit when they trusted Christ for forgiveness and salvation.

It was, after all, the Holy Spirit who inspired the Scriptures to begin with. “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21). “All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Timothy 3:16), that is, “God-breathed,” where the “breath of God” is none other than the “Spirit of God.” Concerning his own divinely inspired writings, Paul said: “We speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth” (1 Corinthians 2:13).

Likewise it is the same Spirit indwelling each believer who illumines, and confirms, and applies His own Scriptures to the individual Christian who reads or hears them. “The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14). On the other hand, Jesus promised His disciples that “when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13).

This He does through the Scriptures He inspired, with blessings abundant as we study them prayerfully and with believing and obedient hearts.

WE ALL NEED TO CLAIM THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM THAT JESUS HAD EVEN DAILY!

Isaiah 11: 1    There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
2     The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.
3     His delight is in the fear of the LORD, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;
4     But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.
5     Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, And faithfulness the belt of His waist.
